Slovakia
Liebenzell Mission
has been at work for over ten years in Slovakia, primarily among the Roma (Gypsy) people. While the country has recently became a member of the European Union, the economic
benefits of this association have not reached everyone. Foreign investment
has focused mostly upon the western portion of the country.
The Communist era left its mark on the
5.3 million people and the church. Christian work among youth was prohibited;
the church consists mainly of older people and there are few young trained
pastors or church leaders ready to replace those who are retiring.
Now
many doors have been opened, but there is a lack of qualified workers.
Liebenzell is active in church and youth ministries as well as biblical
training. Christian youth from Germany also come for short-term trips
to teach German at local schools. English teachers would also be welcome
in this ministry.
In the Gemer Valley, 40% of the
population is of Roma background. Unemployment is high, and government
subsidies decline each year. The Roma people are despised and largely
ignored.
Gustav is a 58 year old Roma who has
been a valuable member of the mission team for several years. He can identify
with the struggles of his people, and speak from personal experience about
how God changes lives, not necessarily situations. "I am one of you," he begins
a meeting, "and I know your frustration. But then I came to know
Christ. Jesus has radically changed my life. I can now look confidently
to the future."
In the last two years, the missions
team has developed two Bible programs specifically for the Roma. One is
a basic Bible course, while the second trains people in sharing their
faith.
