Papua New Guinea
In 1914, Liebenzell Mission started its
work on the island of Manus. This work has spread to the
mainland, New Britain and New Ireland. With 96% of the
4.6 million residents reported to be church members, this
mission work is well beyond its pioneer days.
However, many are still only Christian by
birth. While the churches in PNG are independent, they
still request assistance with qualified workers to help
train pastors and laymen and support work among
youth. Other projects include social work in the
poor districts, teaching at Christian high schools and
providing schooling for missionary kids.
Recently there has been a new awareness among PNG
Christians to take up their responsibility in reaching
out to other nationalities and religious groups with the
hope of the Gospel. This movement has allowed LM
missionaries to begin a partnership with local Christians
in mission endeavors.

In order to better reach the isolated
communities of the Sepik region (on the northern coast)
Liebenzell recently constructed a new
facility to serve as a training center and staff housing.
The starting point for the work in the Sepik region is the coastal city of Wewak.
The ministry will focus on providing Bible training for
church leaders in the region as well as teaching
vocational skills so that church leaders can support
themselves.
The effort has been hampered in recent months by a severe lack of qualified pilots serving with Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF).
