Who We Are . . .

Liebenzell USA is an international, interdenominational mission organization dedicated to fulfilling the Great Commission of our Lord by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and by instructing believers in obedience to the Word of God, wherever He may lead around the world.

Liebenzell USA is . . .

. . . evangelical, propagating the Gospel of the grace of God revealed in the Scriptures.
. . . evangelistic, being concerned to win souls to Christ.
. . . interdenominational, fostering fellowship with all denominations and assemblies of like Biblical faith, believing that the fundamentals which unite us are more vital than the points on which we agree to differ.
. . . a faith mission, leaning solely on the Lord in prayer for our support through individuals and churches. This partnership of praying and giving Christians with missionaries on the fields demonstrates the unique interdependence of the body of Christ worldwide.

Liebenzell USA is a member of Liebenzell Mission International (LMI) consisting of independent offices in Austria, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States. An office in Korea is in development.

Where We've Been . . . Our History

In the late 1800's, Hudson Taylor traveled throughout Europe, garnering support for the work of the China Inland Mission. In Germany, news of Taylor's work so excited Rev. Heinrich Coerper that he founded the German Support Branch of the China Inland Mission in 1899. The little society grew quickly, sending out its first missionary to Hunan province within a year. In 1902, the mission was given a new home in the Black Forest town of Bad Liebenzell - and thus became Liebenzell Mission.

The work grew rapidly and spread to other fields in Asia and the Pacific: Manus Island, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Japan and Palau. By the 1930's, over 80 missionaries were involved in full time ministry overseas. The outbreak of World War II disrupted the work as missionaries were expelled, imprisoned or killed. In the late 1930s, a missionary couple returning to ministry in China became stranded in America as war broke out in Europe and Asia. Henry and Anna Zimmermann united several small groups of faithful mission supporters in the U.S. and founded Liebenzell USA in 1941. They purchased an old mansion and farm in rural northwestern New Jersey to welcome displaced German missionaries arriving in America, seeking refuge from the war. Within ten years, the first U.S. missionary was sent out to Manus Island, Papua New Guinea; others soon followed.

Liebenzell's work expanded to Taiwan when missionaries were forced to leave China in the early 1950s. Over the last 30 years, Liebenzell has entered new fields of service in Africa, Europe, and South America. Today about 250 career missionaries serve with Liebenzell Mission International through its seven independent branches. Many more short-term volunteers also assist in taking the Gospel to all the world.

What We Believe . . .

Liebenzell USA is an international organization composed of evangelicals from many different denominations, who unreservedly subscribe to its doctrinal statement.

The doctrinal position of the Liebenzell USA is based on historic reformation foundations and holds a loyal position toward the Word of God. We subscribe to a conservative, evangelical theology and believe in the essential and vital importance of being diligent to observe the unity of the Spirit and to "speak the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:3, 15). Jesus prayed for the oneness of His people. He also prayed that they might be kept from evil and in truth (John 17).

Teens in MissionFor this reason, we strive for both truth and unity within the Body of Christ. We will not sacrifice the truth to improve external relations and widen fellowship. Similarly, we do not condone the spirit of schism, which disrupts the spiritual unity of the church and weakens its testimony.

The policy of Liebenzell USA is to maintain an independent position in relation to groups outside the Mission, while endeavoring to maintain fellowship with those of like evangelical position. We seek to preserve our interdenominational character, in view of our responsibility to the entire evangelical community represented in our membership.

Statement of Faith

We believe that the whole Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is the Divine authority
and infallible rule for faith, life and doctrine.

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Divine Persons,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
equal in nature, power and glory.

We believe in the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life,
in His miracles, in His shed blood as the only atonement for sin, in His bodily
resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father and in His personal
return in power and glory.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin, testifies of Christ,
enables the believer to live a victorious life, and guides into all truth.

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin
and is in need of regeneration through faith in Jesus Christ.

We believe in the resurrection of the body. The believer will arise to eternal life,
the unbeliever will arise to eternal condemnation.

We believe in the Spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe in the commission of the Risen Christ,
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
(Matthew 28:19,20).

We uphold the truths as stated in the Nicene and Apostles' Creeds.
